The amount of times we use the word because on a day-to-day basis in our speech could be excessive. Speaking is very different to writing, especially academic writing. We use because to justify our actions, but in an academic piece of writing because can come across as passive.

You can avoid the use of because in youracademic writingby using a different conjunction. Here are a few synonyms for because: where, whereas, since, as though, as, in order to, in order that, since, wherever, while, although, after.

If you use the following, it will make you come across as more of an academic authority. The above example can now become‘I want to go to the circus since it will be fun’,or‘I want to go to the circus as it will be fun.’
